Scribble Marathon for diverse pictures

As adult educators we are often trapped in the situation that we try to find stock images that do not fully fit the diverse world, we are living in. If we only find and use pictures of men in leadership positions, if all people are slim, if every person has white skin we re-create homogeneous situations, which are not the reality.

Pictures subconsciously influence our thinking. They transport message about, who is strong, who has something to say and generally how our world looks like. We live in a diverse world with people of different colour, different culture and religion, different sex and gender, etc.

With this project we – alp and 2kroner (Germany) – would like to contribute to the diversity of pictures in adult education. Further we like to poke a discussion about the choice of pictures and what diverse pictures mean.

In detail the goals of the Erasmus+ Project “Scribble Marathon – for a diverse visual language in adult education” are:

 – Increase the diversity in adult education materials

In the project we will produce at least 400 digital pictures for adult education that take into account the reality of LGBTQI*, women/gender and migrants. We want to develop diverse visual motifs for learning and teaching material that offer an opportunity for identification for learners from disadvantaged groups.

Further the project will contribute to the discourse on diverse, non-stereotypical images in adult education and sensitise trainers in adult education to check image motifs for (un)conscious stereotyping.

 – Solid digital skills of adult education trainers in the use of the graphics tablet and associated drawing software

The trainers involved will create the pictures with the Wacom graphics tablet and corresponding free software (GIMP, Krita, Inkscape). Through peer learning and expert support we will professionalise our competences in diversity-sensitive motif design and its technical realisation.

 – Successful networking with marginalised groups

As adult education providers we would like to increase our network with marginalised groups and adult educators, who are working with them through the different exchange activities in Berlin and Vienna.

The first pictures you can see already in the slider at the top. All pictures we will present in an online event “Sharing is caring” during the Erasmusdays 2022.
