Find Your Beauty: A Mindfulness Practice for Self-Awareness in Nature
By Peter Hofmann
A few weeks ago, I attended an Advanced Training as a Mindfulness Facilitator in Outdoor Contexts. Through three immersive blocks, we explored how nature can be a powerful catalyst for mindfulness, resilience, and personal growth. We spent considerable time alone in the forest, developed intentions through outdoor exercises, and integrated our experiences through storytelling and dialogue. But the most profound lesson? True leadership begins with self-awareness, and nature is the perfect mirror to help us see our own beauty and strength.
This journey inspired a practice to help leaders and individuals connect with their inner beauty: The Find Your Beauty Exercise.
Find Your Beauty: A Mindfulness Practice in Nature
1. Go into Nature
Find a quiet natural space where you can be undisturbed.
- Walk mindfully, paying attention to your surroundings.
- Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment.
- Notice the colors, textures, and sounds around you.
From the Training: This draws on the use of the natural environment and the development of attitudes such as resilience and flexibility through outdoor methodology, as explored in the first block.
Leadership Skill: Presence – Leaders who cultivate mindfulness in nature bring more focus and clarity to their roles.
2. Find and Describe with Appreciation
Find something in nature that you find beautiful or meaningful.
- Observe it closely, noticing its details.
- Write a description of it, focusing on what you appreciate about it.
- Use sensory language to capture its essence.
From the Training: This aligns with the time spent alone in the forest from the second block, which strengthened capacities of mindfulness and dealing with challenges.
Leadership Skill: Appreciation – Leaders who practice gratitude and appreciation foster positive environments and deeper connections.
3. Read It to Yourself
Now, read your description aloud, as if it were addressed to you.
- Imagine the beauty you described is speaking directly to your soul.
- Notice how it feels to receive these words of appreciation.
- Reflect on what this reveals about your own inner beauty.
From the Training: This reflects the integration activities from the third block, including storytelling, journaling, and heartfelt dialogue to process and internalize experiences.
Leadership Skill: Self-Awareness – Leaders who understand and appreciate their own worth inspire confidence and authenticity in others.
Why This Matters for Leaders
Mindfulness in nature isn’t just about relaxation—it’s about reconnecting with the beauty within ourselves that we often overlook. The training taught me that when we take time to appreciate the natural world, we also learn to appreciate our own strengths and capabilities.
Leaders who practice this approach:
- Build resilience (by connecting with their inner strength),
- Foster self-compassion (by recognizing their own worth),
- Inspire authenticity (by leading from a place of self-awareness).
The next time you’re feeling disconnected or doubting yourself, try this: Go into nature. Find beauty. And let it remind you of your own.
What would change in your leadership if you saw your own beauty as clearly as you see it in nature?
