Balancing Energy: A Yin/Yang Practice for Agile Leadership
By Irene Rojnik
A few weeks ago, I attended the Agile Leadership course, which explored how to rethink and live leadership responsibly in times of disruptive change like AI, digitization, and biohacking. We examined how to create agile management cultures and what tools can support this approach. Through models like the MDI-Surfer-Model, Business Model Canvas, and Cynefin Framework, we developed practical ways to navigate complexity. But the most profound lesson? Agile leadership is about balancing energies—knowing when to direct and when to empower, when to act and when to listen.
This journey inspired a practice to help leaders find this balance: The Yin/Yang Communication Exercise.
The Yin/Yang Communication: A Practice in Agile Leadership
1. Identify Your Communication Challenge
Reflect on a recent situation where communication felt unbalanced or ineffective.
- Describe the context briefly.
- Ask: Was I too directive? Too passive? Or was the other person?
- Notice how this imbalance affected the outcome.
From the Course: This practice draws on the Yin/Yang communication techniques, which we explored as a framework for understanding complementary forces in leadership.
Leadership Skill: Self-Awareness – Leaders who recognize their default communication style can consciously choose a more effective approach.
2. Explore Both Energies
Now, consider how the situation might have unfolded with a different energy.
- Yang (Active/Directive): How could you have been more assertive, structured, or goal-oriented?
- Yin (Receptive/Empowering): How could you have been more open, listening, or empowering?
- Visualize both approaches playing out.
From the Course: This aligns with the agile leadership principle that effectiveness often lies in balancing these complementary energies, rather than defaulting to one.
Leadership Skill: Adaptability – Agile leaders can shift between directive and empowering styles based on the situation and team needs.
3. Practice the Switch
Choose one upcoming conversation to practice this balance.
- Start with your natural tendency (Yang or Yin).
- Consciously switch to the opposite energy mid-conversation.
- Observe the impact on the other person and the discussion.
From the Course: This reflects the deepened personal leadership skills and widened communication skills gained from the course.
Leadership Skill: Emotional Intelligence – Leaders who can read the situation and adapt their communication style build stronger relationships and better outcomes.
Why This Matters for Leaders
Agile leadership isn’t about being one thing all the time. It’s about discerning when to lead with Yang energy and when to step back into Yin, creating a dynamic balance that responds to the needs of the moment. The course taught me that the most effective leaders are those who can navigate this spectrum with intention.
Leaders who practice this approach:
- Build stronger teams (by adapting their style to what the team needs),
- Navigate complexity (by having multiple tools at their disposal),
- Foster innovation (by creating space for both direction and empowerment).
The next time you’re in a conversation, try this: Pause. Notice your energy. And ask: what does this moment need from me?
What would change in your leadership if you consciously balanced directive and receptive energies?
